Invitation to the Middle Ages

January 25th, 2008

It’s hard to believe, but the term (at least as far as the actual teaching is concerned) is already over.

Work on the Medieval Village has made excellent progress, and I’d like to thank all participants for their input and their great ideas!

Let me take this opportunity to invite anyone who’s interested to experience the results first-hand to come along for the “village-warming party” on Friday, February 1st between 11:15 and 12:45 CET.

Here’s the location.

A nobleman’s daughter on an errand for her mistress

December 21st, 2007

My mistress wanted me to go to village and to get her some things. I didn’t go out often so I guess I got lost. While waking around and trying to find the shops I was told about I came across a strange village. It must be new because things seemed so different there.

It smells different. I don’t know what to make of it. And there are boards with writings on them. About our kings and poems. I don’t know why people would do something like that. And why are these things outside? Don’t they have any other place to put them to? I tired to find a shop but there were none. Wherever I went, it was full of boards and explaining things. Why do they need to explain how our life works? I don’t understand this. But the church is pretty. It was a little small but I guess it’s made just for the nobleman’s family.

It was a strange place indeed and I am not sure if I want to go back there or not.

Where are all the morals gone? – My tour as a monk

December 20th, 2007

When I had an insight into the future world on my time travelling tour to the year 2007 I was kind of shocked, I have to admit. I was hoping to see godly and devoutly living folks that recognized their destination on earth. But my hope wasn’t fulfilled at all – people running around half naked, sex shops, music and entertainment everywhere – that`s what`s going on out there. People seem to lack orientation, they have no idea about their purpose in life. How come church and faith are forgotten? Where are all the good morals gone? I see a great need of proselytizing…

Blue hair?

December 20th, 2007

I really liked this idea of travelling forward in time, travelling to the year 2007, but now, after I had a look around this strange thing called “Second Life”, I´m not at all sure this is my kind of thing…

It was one of the strangest experiences ever. So many things I hadn´t expected… I wonder how much time people in this thing spend on their appearance. Everyone seems to be obsessed with clothes, make up and accessories – there are so many shops where people can spend thousands of dollars on it. And don´t the people realize how silly they look? I´ve seen girls with blue hair, can you imagine that? How can blue be a hair colour???

The places I´ve visited were weird, too. A very strange world indeed, I can´t even tell you what I´ve seen, it would be too much for you to take. However, there seem to be at least some normal minds in this “Second Life”, people who have decided to live a normal life in a normal medieval village, with a proper stable and a Viking ship. So it seems that after all there´s at least some hope for the future…

God will be angry!!!!!

December 20th, 2007

After Blue Fotherington and me, Gredi Wobbit, arrived in the “new brave world” Second Life, we temporary loss our consciousness. To clean our heads we used “drawing blood for medical purposes”. We saw a blasphemic round Earth.earth.jpg

God will be angry – Earth is a disc.

The great punishment will arrive very soon.

But then we recognized the fresh air and the healthy teeth’s of men. But we got scared from all these apocalyptic sounds from the street. So we decided to leave this world very quickly.

So Far

A wary traveller on the sim

December 20th, 2007

First I was a-thinking, why aren’t there any biests here, and where are all the folks gone? Then I stopped short as I saw the ship. Vikings, here? I listened for sounds of a fight, but I couldn’t hear a thing. That’s strange, even stranger than all those plates with pictures and writings on them that were standing about.

But the big empty stone house with the ghastly half-roof was the weirdest thing of all. I didn’t go inside any of those houses, of course, the place was far too spooky for my liking.

Near the shore, next to an eery flat cow… there hung a Crucifix in the air. That did not soothe my nerves at all, although maybe it should have.

I’ve heard enough tales back at home to know when it’s healthier to leave a place, so I fled.

Day to day life

November 26th, 2007

I was thinking about items and topics referring to the aspect of the daily medieval life. I figured it is helpful to talk about economy. So I bought sheep and some other animals that were týpical for the English economy of the 14 century. I would like to give visitors the possibilty to get information about the specific situation in England. In contrast to the continental Europe, England mainly invested in sheep and so gained the status of one of the greatest wool exporting States. The dicision to settle sheep on the Island was mainly influenced by the “black Death. As someone else in the course is telling sth. about it in detail I figured the topics would fit together.

Furthermore I would like to post something concerning religion, but I do not have an specific idea so far..

Flying Sparks

Today, things got hot during the seminar, what with flaming arrows zooming through the air… Fortunately, the only victim was the wooden horse. :-)

Eleanor Applemoor: Romances & Knights

November 16th, 2007

I’ve bought a helmet to give an authentic look to the tournament tent. Hopefully more pieces of armour will follow. But still it’s a start.

In the tent we will present the genre of the romance and the concept of the knights. We will connect our exposition to that of the “weapon and wars” group.
